Winter Blues

Did you know that many people notice a change in their mood as the temperature drops? Although we are halfway through winter (woohoo!), Calgary is still experiencing cold weather, grey skies and shorter days. The good news?! There are tools available to make the winter season more bearable.

Here are some ways you can cope with the winter blues:

  1. Seek out the sun! Whether it is getting outside or opening your curtains, the sun can help to boost serotonin and vitamin D levels, both of which are believed to improve one’s emotional state.
  2. Get physical. Even though it might feel like the last thing you’d like to do, moving your body can be a great way to manage your mental health (and physical health too).
  3. Stimulate your senses. Activating your senses can help to keep you grounded in the present moment. For instance, light some candles or brighten up your room with a colourful blanket.

If you feel it is getting more and more difficult to cope with the winter blues, consider seeking professional support. You can book a complimentary consultation at or by calling 403-454-7600.
