Study Smarter, Not Harder

With school back into the swing of things, having good study skills will be paramount to the success of students!  Whether you are in high school or heading back to college, here are some study tips and strategies that are scientifically proven to help you succeed.

  1. Do not cram! Give yourself enough time to study. The brain needs time to consolidate the learning of new information.
  2. Organize your space. Do you have enough room for your notebooks and textbooks? Is your chair comfortable? Is your space well-lit? Is your study space distraction-free?
  3. Take regular breaks. Studies support the use of regular breaks for the long term retention of knowledge.
  4. Plan your study time. Set alarms, use day-timers, or make to-do lists to remind yourself of your study plans. Take note of important dates too (ex. exams, assignment due dates).
  5. Discover your learning style. Most of us have a preferred way of learning. Some prefer to learn by listening (for example, using a podcast or recording), others learn by seeing (such as colour-coding notes or creating diagrams), and some learn by doing (for instance as role-playing).
  6. Practice, practice, practice! Taking practice quizzes and exams is an excellent way to practice applying your study knowledge.
  7. Study with a group. Working with your classmates can facilitate an interactive environment. You can quiz each other, explain concepts to one another, and hold each other accountable.
  8. Take care of yourself! Do not underestimate the power of good sleep, nourishing foods, and staying hydrated.
