Breathing exercises can be an excellent tool to help with stress relief and to help ground oneself in times of emotional disregulation. It can be powerful in calming both the body and the mind. In fact, when using breathing exercises the brain receives a message saying that you can calm down and relax. The brain then sends this message to the rest of the body to help activate the calming response.

One breathing tool that can be used when feeling overwhelmed or disregulated is  4-7-8 breathing.

How to do it:

  1. Start by sitting in a comfortable position. Your eyes can be open or closed.
  2. Inhale through your nose for 4 counts.
  3. Hold your breath for 7 counts.
  4. Exhale slowly through your mouth for 8 counts.
  5. Repeat.
