There is a strong relationship between our minds and our bodies. When we experience trauma or stress, we experience a physiological response that reverberates through our bodies. Muscles become tense, stress related hormones are produced, and digestion slows down, while the heart rate speeds up. Behind all of this, the nervous system directs the course of events. Our mind-body therapies work with your body to support you in shifting these physiological responses. Through recurring sessions with our therapists, you are supported in establishing the ability to recognize and create these shifts on your own.
Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy
BCST therapy is deeply supportive in balancing the nervous system. Trauma and the daily stresses of life can cause imbalances and taxation within our Autonomic Nervous System and our bodies continually run in fight, flight or frozen states. This therapy helps to slow things down, create a deep relaxation, self repair and connection to our body.
Restorative Yoga, Somatic Yoga and Yoga Therapy
These gentle yoga sessions restore harmony in the bodies systems, while decreasing pain, stiffness and inflammation. Over time your body learns to naturally activate its’ own relaxation response, whereby your system let’s go of held chronic tension. These trauma informed yoga sessions invite you to begin your session in the posture that feels most comfortable and safe, either on a massage table or on the floor. Using supportive props and gentle movements, most postures are practiced from a lying or side lying position where you are supported in freeing your breath, releasing tension and soothing your nervous system.
Somatic Movement invites slow voluntary movements, which support you in releasing held tension, chronic pain and stress. With commitment and time, you can experience freedom from habitual patterns through sensory motor awareness and neuromuscular re-education.
Signature Essential Oil Sessions
These sessions are offered to Serenity clients in conjunction with your counselling appointments, both prior to or after your session. Your practitioner tailors your session by choosing from eight specific therapeutic grade essential oils, which are gently dropped along your spine. Over a period of five days, these oils continue to absorb into the spinal nerve attachments, thereby calming your nervous system, assisting in overall organ functioning and boosting immune health.
Thai Yoga Therapy (Massage)
Thai Yoga Therapy is a trauma informed massage practice developed to merge the arts of Thai Yoga Massage and Yoga Therapy. Honouring the needs of your body and mind, Thai Yoga Therapy integrates both stillness and movement within yoga postures while you are massaged in a soothing rhythmic fashion. Designed to support shifting your nervous system into its most relaxed state, sessions support you in freeing your breath, releasing tension and establishing ease in your body. Clients are fully clothed in these gentle massage sessions that are offered either on the floor or the massage table.
Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY)
Trauma Center Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is an evidence-based adjunct technique for clinical treatment supporting healing from complex trauma or chronic, treatment-resistant Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). TCTSY has foundations in Trauma Theory, Attachment Theory, Neuroscience, and Hatha Yoga practice with an emphasis on body-based yoga forms and breathing practices.
Trauma Informed Massage Therapy
Trauma Informed Massage Therapy (TIMT) provides a safe container for you to receive the healing benefits of massage. Sessions are client led; your feedback and consent are asked for throughout the massage experience. Your therapist will only massage those areas, where you fully permit, and your wishes will be respected in terms of pressure and technique. In TIMT sessions, clients may be fully clothed, and you will be given the option to receive your massage on the massage table or massage chair. Our priority in these sessions is to support you in experiencing deep relaxation and ease within your body in the safest manner possible.
Massage Therapy for Anxiety, Depression and Stress
When we experience anxiety, depression or stress; much of what we experience relates to what is happening physiologically in the body. Our specialized approach to massage therapy, is designed to address what is happening within your body, in terms of releasing muscle tension, freeing restricted breath patterns and soothing a stressed nervous system. Our intention is to support you in establishing greater emotional resilience during those times when you feel taken out of your zone of comfort.
Most body, yoga and massage services are covered by extended health benefits. Thai Yoga Therapy and Massage Therapy appointments, made with one of our Registered Massage Therapists, are covered by all Healthcare Plans in Alberta.
